Windrush Formula 18 - Bloomfield Design

Windrush Yachts approached Bloomfield Innovation to design the hull for their new F-18 Edge last year and design work started at the end of September (2009).  In less than four months the boat has been designed, production moulds completed and the first two boats built and sailing; the boys have only had a few days sailing to set the boats up before driving all the way across the country (Australia - they are currently en route) to compete at the Nationals.

During the design process Windrush provided valuable practical feedback about the characteristics they were looking for in the new design and the negative traits of competing designs; this allowed us to tailor the design to incorporate those characteristics and explain the effects of the various hull features to the client.

The new design is derived from our current, highly successful, larger catamaran hull series appropriately modified for this particular application.  A prominent new feature is the "Edge" or chine that extends the full length of the hull parallel to the waterline and the bow profile that is vertical below the "Edge" and raked aft above it.  This chine serves a number of functions including providing an aesthetic signature for the design and a number of performance enhancements in resistance and sea-keeping.

We are well aware of how competitive the F-18 field is and it is a big challenge to enter such a well developed class with so many big names pushing years of specialised development. Only time will tell, but early indications are very encouraging in a range of wind conditions.

Expedition Catamaran Motor Yacths on the Horizon

Expedition 55 Profile

Bloomfield Catamaran Designs is developing a new range of Expedition Catamaran Motor Yachts with U.S. based company 'Pacific Expedition Yachts'. The new line of boats will suit owners who are looking for the toughness and reliability of a trawler with the comfort and classic styling of a motor yacht combined with all of the speed stability and room advantages of a catamaran. The great looks and cruising potential of these boats have already generated a lot of interest with both traditional monohull and seasoned multihull sailors who recognise the potential of the designs' many advantages over existing alternatives.

The hull design for the new boats is a development of a long line of catamaran ferry and workboat designs that have proven successful in the commercial arena. More details on the range of boats is available from the Pacific Expedition Yachts' Website - www.PacificExpedition.com

Carbon Spar Design Endorsement

Cheekee Monkee's owner is very happy with his new carbon fibre mast design, he says:

"The mast is spectacular and everything is working very well. The capshroud and headstay attachment system is terrific, the soft padeyes and external halyard sheaves have worked very well, and nothing shows any signs of unusual wear or chafe. The mast is very stiff."

A new carbon fibre mast design was built to replace the previous carbon fibre mast which suffered irreparable damage. The new section is lighter and stiffer than the previous mast.

The boat has had a very successful and eventful first season with the new mast. She suffered an unfortunate capsize in her first race in which the mast suffered no structural damage despite hitting the the sea bed. Following that the boat has scored in a string of races including First place in the Queens Cup, multhull line honours in the Chicago Mackinac Race and second in the Port Huron Mackinac.

The carbon mast was designed by Bloomfield Catamaran Designs and constructed by Wahoo Composites. The design incorporates a lot of proprietary technology developed by Bloomfield Catamaran Designs, which has been well proven on a number of yachts. Bloomfield Catamaran Plans offer engineering for a wide range of carbon fibre and other composite components.

Raw Nerve Wins Fifth Gladstone Race

Raw Nerve has once again proven itself to be the fastest offshore yacht in Australia by taking out line honours for a record fifth time (four in a row) in the Brisbane to Gladstone Race, the longest running mulihull offshore race in the world; skippered by Martyn Riley with designer Stuart Bloomfield as navigator/helmsman. Finishing an hour and a half ahead of Ichi Ban, the monohull race winner and current Sydney to Hobart winner, the 56' catamaran maintained it's offshore racing record, not having been beaten accross the line in it's current configuration.

Bloomfield 30 first in Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race

Martyn Riley's Bloomfield 30 Catamaran recently took line honours (first to finish) in the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race beating the 98' maxi Skandia across the line in the 156nm race. Despite conditions not well suited to catamarans, included many hours of bashing upwind in 20-30 knots followed by square running in light to moderate breeze, the little catamaran crossed the line 12 mins ahead of the big monohull and an fleet of over 80 monohulls and multihulls, after starting 10 mins behind the monohulls. The little catamaran was unbeaten across the line during the Port Lincoln Regatta the following week. Stuart was navigator/helmsman for the series.
